E-Learning Provision and Participation: Trends, Patterns and Highlights

Published April 2011: This report analyses tertiary sector e-learning provision at a system, sub-sector and course level from 2004 to 2008. The sub-sectors focused on in the report are universities and polytechnics and the course levels bachelors degrees and certificates (Levels 1-4). Participation in e-learning course at these levels over the same time period is analysed by focusing on the following learner groups: 18-19 year olds, the 40+ age group, Māori, Pasifika and European and females and males.

Minister releases NZ tertiary education briefings

This report was commissioned by the Ministry and undertaken by the Waikato Institute of Technology in collaboration with the Industry Training Federation. The report’s main objectives were to:

Identify how e-Learning is employed in work-based and work-placed learning both internationally and nationally.
Describe the impact of e-Learning on building workforce capability globally and nationally.
Assess the demand from employers, providers and learners for e-Learning in improving individual and organisational capability.
Demonstrate how, and in what ways, e-Learning can aid particular industry sectors in building workforce capability.
Examine reasons why e-Learning is not being used in particular industry sectors to support work-based and work-placed learning.
Recommend further activities that could be taken to promote and embed the effective use of e-Learning in work-based and work-placed e-Learning.

This overview from the Australian Flexible Learning Framework is an excellent summary of key aspects of good online facilitation. It begins to explore the complexity of this function and demonstrates why this is a skilled and specialised role in effective elearning.

Just as the teacher manages discussions and learning activities in the traditional classroom, so it is online.

However, online teaching has some special challenges: students often have not met one another or the teacher, the nature of communication is limiting and void of visual cues, and there are challenges keeping tabs on individual students’ learning when they are studying remotely.

The role of the online teacher or facilitator is therefore both special and crucial for effective learning outcomes and enjoyable learning experiences.

The recommended download this week is really a whole series of downloads. Peer Group and Collaborative Learning in real and virtual worlds was the theme for the eLearning at Edinburgh Conference held in August. The full conference programme with links to abstracts, presentations and videos is available.

The information is intended for elearning professionals and is heavy going if you are new to the field, but even a quick glance through the abstracts will give you a sense of the scope of collaborative elearning in practice.

If you have a thorough understanding of elearning practise there is some excellent knowledge on offer.
